There are several myths surrounding memory care, the specialized attention for individuals with memory impairments, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. It’s important to debunk these myths to promote a better understanding of memory care by providing accurate information to help families find the right level of care at the right time for their loved ones.
Living in Memory Care Neighborhoods does not take away the independence of those living with dementia. To the contrary, our Neighborhood increases the self-reliance of the residents living with dementia. This is accomplished by providing purposeful events, verbal or physical cues, assistance only when needed, and patience, creating a supportive atmosphere. The Neighborhood is not boring nor impersonal. We provide a structured day with activities and events. Building rapport and gaining knowledge of our residents is important in keeping them engaged.
Dementia doesn’t affect just the elderly. Young onset dementia, symptoms before the age of 65, statistically accounts for 9% of cases. Once an individual with dementia becomes acclimated to the Memory Care Neighborhood they are in an environment to thrive. The staff is trained and dedicated to watch for certain cognitive issues and understand specific situations. They can support the resident living dementia to maintain their independence and dignity.
As the Memory Care Director at Kingsland Walk Senior Living, I hope this information helps provide a better picture of an Arrow Memory Care Neighborhood.
