As leaders, we hold the power to inspire, uplift, and bring out the best in our team members. As the Executive Director of Kingsland Walk Senior Living, I want to explore what empowerment means to me, its impact on the workload, and the strategies I use to empower my team members, as well as the current threats to the senior living industry and how empowerment can be a catalyst for overcoming these challenges.

Empowerment, to me, means allowing my team to lead their departments in their own management style. I am here to support their decisions and ideas, and to offer coaching when needed. When my team feels empowered, the teamwork and support we offer to one another is incredible. It allows me to delegate tasks to the person that has the most skill to assist and gives that person a sense of satisfaction and growth.

I empower with consistent praise, provide in-services for education, encourage open communication about goals, and help create a path to achieve them.

The greatest threat to the senior living industry is economic crisis. An empowered team will work together to offer creative solutions to help assure and encourage the community.

Corrective actions are not always the best answer. Often, good conversation explaining situations, in-services, and one-on-one coaching is a good way to empower both directors and staff.
