Men’s Health Month was created in 1992 to raise awareness of the importance of proper screenings, early detection, and obtaining regular medical advice for men and to encourage young men to implement self-care and a healthy lifestyle. Studies show a significant difference between the health of men and the health of women, as men are less likely to seek treatment for preventable diseases.
I feel men do not seek medical treatment because most men live in a stereotypical world that believes they must be “tough or macho.” I believe another big reason is because in a family, typically the man will put his wife and children before himself. If the family has money issues, or cannot afford insurance for the entire family, most often, mom and the kids will have insurance.
A few simple changes that can be made to create a healthy lifestyle for men’s health includes changing the way you eat, making sure you are staying hydrated, exercise, getting enough sleep, and listening to your body. If you’re sick or feel something is wrong, go to the doctor!
Men, you can help to improve your overall health and decrease your risk for serious diseases and illnesses by taking some time for yourself. Get outside, exercise, and take time to relax. Men need to start being more proactive. It is important for every man to find a primary care physician they are comfortable with and stay up to date on important health screenings.
At Kingsland Walk Senior Living University City, MO, we take the health and well-being of our male residents, whether in Independent Living, Assisted Living, or Memory Care, very seriously.
Healthy lifestyles and self-care for most men start only when needed. Preventative screenings, along with regular checkups while younger, can help lead to a healthier, richer, and more enjoyable life in the later years for men.
