Kingsland Walk Senior Living Thanks and Celebrates Its Culinary Director

Fun Fact: The hat that chefs wear is called a Toque Blanche, which means white hat in French. It is believed that the height of the hat symbolizes the seniority and rank of the chef in the kitchen and the folds in the hat express the qualification of the chef.

Culinary art is the mastery of preparing, cooking, and presenting food. Culinarians, or Chefs, are experts in this field and can be found in hotels and restaurants around the world. The depth of their talent extends far beyond the kitchen. Chefs also have a profound understanding of design, food science, nutrition, and diet.

Culinarians Day, held annually on July 25th, is a day to thank and celebrate the people who impact our experience with food in such meaningful ways. Worldwide, this day is a time to appreciate the art of cooking and is often commemorated with events and competitions. At Kingsland Walk Senior Living, we will honoring our amazing Culinary Director, Vincent Hely, and their team!

Vince comes to us with many years of experience. He worked at the St. Louis Club for six years. Before that, he was the Executive Chef of Aero Hawk. The most interesting fact about our Culinary Director is his solo album of his own music! Vince plays multiple instruments including guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums. When not working, he enjoys playing his music, as well as going on walks, reading, and relaxing.

Vince had the opportunity to prepare a meal for Paul McCartney! Vince says he enjoyed Paul’s company and he was easy to speak with. He would also, one day, like to make a meal for Robert Fripp, as they share the love of music together.

The signature sweet Vince prepares for our community is red velvet cake and tiramisu. These are individualized, made with love, and loved by residents and guests alike! His favorite dish to make is spanakopita, which is a Greek savory spinach pie.

Our restaurant, Maybelline’s, has a fantastic variety of entrees provided. We listen to the residents’ requests and incorporate their favorite dishes into our menu.

The entire culinary team works well together. The biggest challenge is getting all the dishes done. We do not have a dishwasher, so everyone steps up! We could not do what we do at Maybelline’s without this hardworking team!
